Kathy King is a ceramic artist from Roswell, Georgia. Kathy taught art in middle school and high school for six years in Kansas City where she her husband Steve. They have lived in Roswell for the past 20 years and raised two children. Kathy is an Interior Designer but returned to her true passion about eight years ago, her love of pottery.
While most of the work is created on a potters wheel, some is hand built. Kathy makes both functional and non functional work and often times, alters it in some way. As she became more inspired by organic forms, Kathy’s work became a combination of both thrown and hand built pieces. The use of metal and found objects also became part of the art form.
Nature is a never-ending source of inspiration influencing her “one of a kind” creations. Soda firing adds to her organic forms. This firing method is an atmospheric firing which introduces
soda water into the kiln at 2350 degrees. The soda vaporizes and is carried throughout the kiln and creating a glaze on the pottery.
Making pottery is Kathy’s passion, a form of meditation, which takes her away from conscience thought. Ideas come from everywhere and nowhere. Her pieces often tell of a passing thought or where she has been. Kathy admits to spending many hours creating her art and many hours dreaming of the infinite possibilities to come.
Kathy won many awards for her pottery. She has won “Best In Show” in 2006, 2008, 2009 at Roswell’s Art Center West and the Visual Art Center in 2006. She has also been awarded Honorable Mention in 2010 and 2011. She was President of the Clay Collective at Art Center West in 2006 and 2007. Her work can be seen at Art Center West in Roswell during “Works In Clay” shows, “The Upstairs Gallery,” also in Roswell and “The Heeney Company” in Atlanta.
